New Grad Student Disappointed To Learn That “Grad School Is Like A Rollercoaster” Did Not Mean It Was Fun

Despite the common saying of grad school being like a rollercoaster, Blake Bishop, a first-year grad student at UCLA and amusement park enthusiast, found themselves thrilled in all the wrong ways.

“I do enjoy a good scream,” Blake explained, “but instead of screaming my head off, I found the ups and downs causing me to want to just scream into a pillow.”

While Blake has suggested visiting Six Flags Magic Mountain, which is less than an hour’s drive away, as a lab outing, not all lab members were a fan.

“I do think the metaphor holds up,” says Su Man, a postdoc in the same lab as Blake who prefers keeping both feet on solid ground. “I finished grad school feeling dizzy and slightly nauseated.”

Blake has also found that their experience in track has also not adequately prepared them for grad school, despite it regularly being referred to as a marathon.
